Hardware - Evocon IIoT device 3 - How to connect a sensor
Which sensor types can be used with the Evocon IIoT device 3 and how to wire a PNP 24V DC sensor to its M12 inputs.
On this page
A sensor is a device whose purpose is to detect events or changes in its environment and send the information to other electronics.
Evocon device can connect to any PNP type sensor that generates digital output signal of 24V DC. There is a variety of sensors available for different characteristics used in different environments and processes.
Sensor types that can be used
-
Optical sensors

- Through beam (also known as sender and receiver).
- Rarely used for Evocon.
- Need to install, cable and align sender and receiver.
- Diffuse reflective
- Object detection based on the amount of light reflecting from the object back to the sensor.
- Range usually up to 30cm for optical sensor. Up to few meters for laser sensors.
- Need to install and align 1 sensor.
- Retro-Reflective
- Object detection based on amount of light reflecting back from the object vs from a reflector.
- Range up to few meters.
- Need to install and align sensor and reflector.
- Through beam (also known as sender and receiver).
-
Laser sensors
-
Metal sensors
-
Measuring wheels
-
Relays
-
Optical
-
Optical with background suppression
-
Optical with reflectors

Connecting sensors
Below is a wiring diagram for connecting a sensor to Evocon device.
All Evocon device inputs are 24V DC inputs. And the A-type 4-pin M12 connectors use standard wiring schematic. PNP-type 24VDC industrial sensors can be connected to Evocon device.
| Pin number | Pin color | Pin electrical connection description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brown | +24V of device power supply |
| 2 | White | Not connected |
| 3 | Blue | 0V (-) of device power supply. Or 0V (-) of the input circuit if the ground connection jumper is removed from inside the device. |
| 4 | Black | 24V (+) optically isolated input. Counts on falling edge (24V -> 0V) |
